The Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT)
as well as many insurance companies and some states require annual
outside inspections. In the ACCT standards it states that an annual course
inspection "by a qualified challenge course professional" for integrity of all
hardware, materials, equipment, and condition of the environment in the vicinity
of the element is required.

Why get an Inspection
he primary purpose of the inspection is to ensure the safety
of your participants on your challenge course. This can best be
accomplished with a thorough inspection to ensure that your
course is in compliance with all current industry standards.
More and more, it is becoming a requirement of insurance
companies that challenge course owners have their courses
inspected by outside agencies at least once a year. Many of
these insurance companies are requiring that the inspector be a
level III or IV ACCT professional vendor member.
What happens during the Inspection
The actual inspection has a few different stages.
A review of your last inspection report. (new clients will be asked to supply
the last report)
A walk-through of the course. (It is preferable with new clients to have
someone accompany us on this phase of the inspection so that we can be
assured of all element locations.)
Inspection of the elements. includes both a thorough visual and tactile
inspection, detailed notes are made of the condition of each element, and
digital photos are taken if there does happen to be a problem with the element.
The following list is an example of some of what we check and look for during an
inspection.:
- Cable clamps are checked for proper torque (as well as rusting and
wear),
- Ferrules are checked for proper swaging and type (as well as any signs
of wear
- Cable is checked for signs of rust, wear and appropriate drape,
- Bolts are checked for proper alignment and signs of wear (on pole
courses for tightness as well),
- Belay hardware is checked for wear and conformity to current standards,
- Platforms are checked for stability and any signs of wear in the wood
A thorough inspection of all challenge course related equipment and a review
of all logs. Detailed notes are taken as to the condition of each piece of
equipment. items checked include:
- Rope
- The condition of the rope
- The age of the rope
- The amount of participant usage
- Rope logs
- Harnesses
- Carabineers
- Belay devices
Upon completion of the inspection, the course manager (or the appropriate
contact person), will be immediately notified if there are any issues with the
course that would preclude the use of any of the elements or pieces of equipment
for reasons of safety. If

After we have completed the physical inspection of the challenge course, we
will issue our clients an inspection report.
